What Is A Good Linux/unix Type Os That I Can Boot From A Usb-flash Drive, And How Do I Get It To Boot From It?

Damn small linux is the way to go. Search it up, download it, and put it on a removable flash drive. It should, during the installation, tell you what to do to boot off of it.

Probably ubuntu if you’re a beginner. Ubuntu can be installed on a flashdrive as if it were a regular harddrive. But the flashdrive has to be at least 4 GB
